Green firm goes carbon neutral

A MEDWAY hire firm is powering carbon reduction.

MEMS Power Generation, based at Beechings Way, Gillingham, claims that it is the first generator hire company to become 100 per cent carbon neutral.

The scheme enables environmentally-conscious companies to reduce their carbon footprint during their hire period.

Clients joining the scheme will have their fuel consumption monitored to calculate the amount of carbon created. The client then contributes 2p per litre of diesel consumed to offset the carbon effect on the atmosphere.

A statement of the carbon created and subsequent offset will be provided at the end of the rental period.

The scheme was developed by MEMS bosses who have pledged to invest revenue generated by the scheme into global carbon reduction projects managed and monitored by Carbon Clear.

Managing director Glen Jarvis said: "We believe that we have an environmental obligation to help reduce CO2 emissions and are proud to be able to offer this service.

"We have worked closely with Carbon Clear this year to assess our carbon footprint and together we have worked on ways we can help make a difference.

"Being the first generator hire company to be 100 per cent carbon neutral is an achievement we are very proud of, but we do not intend to stop there and we have more initiatives in the pipeline."

As part of a green strategy, MEMS also fits its generators with double-skinned fuel tanks and specialised connectors.

Bulk fuel taks are also double-skinned and feature a high-level fuel feed point. Specialist contractors dispose of its waste, and MEMS staff are trained in the handling of hazardous substances.
