Peter Carroll attends crisis talks over soaring fuel costs

A Kent fuel campaigner is attending an emergency meeting with Treasury officials today after the Chancellor suggested he will approve another rise in duty.

Peter Carroll, founder of Fair Fuel UK, is among road hauliers and motoring groups due to lobby minister Chloe Smith in Westminster.

Backers of the Folkestone haulage boss' campaign - including the Road Haulage Association, the Freight Transport Association and the RAC - are among those aiming to stop the spiralling cost of petrol and diesel.

It comes after Chancellor George Osborne indicated the government is set to press ahead with a 3p-a-litre rise in August.

Campaigners are expected to be told the Treasury cannot find the £1.5bn needed to cancel the increase.

There will also be a mass rally in Westminster following the meeting, protesting at fuel prices that are rising by an average 1p a fortnight.

Among the highest fuel prices in Kent today are 140.9p a litre for unleaded and 148.9p a litre for diesel.

Jack Semple, from the Road Haulage Association, said the soaring prices will have affect everyone.

He said: "Diesel has never cost so much and there is nothing the industry can do about it. This is bad news for customers because haulage rates simply have to keep pace with rising costs.

"Inevitably, rising transport costs pushes up the price of everything we buy, including food and clothing."
