Jo Whiley said: “Radio 1’s Big Weekend properly kicks off the summer festival season for me and is a brilliant chance to see a stack of great bands in two days.

“This year the line-up is better than ever - only Radio 1 could bring Madonna to Maidstone - and on top of that I’m definitely going to be checking out The Kooks, Adele, Goldfrapp and Robyn on the main stage.

“I’m also really excited about seeing some of the newer bands especially Black Kids, Gallows, Ting Tings and The Raconteurs.”

Brian Morgan, Maidstone councils’ assistant director of development and community services, said: “Excitement is mounting in Maidstone as Radio 1’s Big Weekend draws closer.

“The event will really put us on the map and create a lasting legacy for the town and our residents. We are working closely with the police and Radio 1 to make sure the event is a huge success and something Maidstone can be proud of.”
