Gillingham boss Mark Stimson will be telling his players to keep their focus as the team head into the final six games with a real chance of automatic promotion.

The Gills took a point off Coca-Cola League 2 leaders Brentford on Saturday and, although they slipped to fourth in the table following the 1-1 draw at Griffin Park, they remain well placed for a top-three finish.

“In the last 10 games we’ve had one defeat and it’s been a fantastic run," said Stimson. "We were back on it on Saturday and we have to keep focused.

“We have dropped out of the promotion places but the most important thing is to be in and around it with six games to go and we are."

Stimson showed his faith in the players on Saturday by sticking with the side that lost 3-0 at struggling Grimsby the previous week.

He said: “You have to have some confidence in the manager that if they do have one bad one, I’ll give them the opportunity to put that right and that’s what I did.”

Gillingham are level on points with Rochdale, who occupy the third and final automatic promotion place, but trail on goal difference.

Just six points separate the Gills and leaders Brentford.
