Title to go to the wire

Medway, red and orange, take on Old Gravesendians

Kent 1 leaders Medway lost 27-3 at nearest rivals Old Gravesendians on Saturday to ensure the title race will go down to the wire.

Medway now lead by just two points with the final round of matches to be played on April 18. If Medway avoid defeat at home to Cranbrook they will take the title, even if OGs manage to win their last match at Gillingham Anchorians.

Head coach Taff Gwilliam said: “We’re still confident but if you had offered us this place at the start of the season then we would have taken it.

“We are in the play-offs and we are going into the last game of the season with a chance of winning the title.”

Hit by injuries, Medway were forced to field a weakened team at OGs. They trailed 5-3 at half-time after Glen Wadsworth’s penalty but the hosts turned up the heat in the second half and ran out comfortable winners.

Gwilliam added: “I’ve got no complaints about the result, they deserved their win.

“We still had positives to come from the game, including the performances of two youngsters, Sam Brice and Stuart Stockford, who both did well for us.”
